Graduate Programs in Bioscience hosts and co-hosts several programs and workshops throughout the Academic Year.  These include:

UCLA Entering Mentoring Training (EMT) Program
An 8-week curriculum based on the model: “Entering Mentoring: A Seminar to Train a New Generation of Scientists,” by J. Handlesman et al. 2009, developed at the University of Wisconsin.

The goals of the mentoring training are to guide mentors to 1) understand “scientific teaching” and apply it in mentoring, 2) build relationship based on trust and respect with a mentee, 3) understand issues related to mentoring diverse students,  and 4) build community with other mentors.

Grad School Hacks
Provides discussion of strategies for effective integration into a Ph.D. program (including lab and department) and offers a forum for students to share experiences with peers and build community.

“Get Connected”
A series of events curated by GPB on topics of professional development for bioscience graduate students. Some events are organized and convened by GPB staff, others by UCLA partners such as the Graduate Division, Biomedical Library and the Career and Writing Centers.

Fellowship Incentive Program
Encourages students to successfully seek out and apply for competitive extramural fellowship opportunities such as the NIH Individual National Research Service Award and the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. The office of Graduate Programs in Bioscience offers an annual $3,000 stipend augmentation to students while holding such fellowships.
