UCLA Safe Black Space for Graduate Students, Postdocs & Faculty
October 1, 2020
6:00pm – 7:30pm
Graduate Programs in Bioscience and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology would like to invite you to participate in a special UCLA Safe Black Space on Oct. 1st, 6:00 – 7:30 PM. Safe Black Space (https://www.safeblackspace.org/ ) provides a place for members of the Black community to process cultural and racial trauma in a community setting. We are hyper-aware of the ongoing murders of Black folks by police in America. We want to acknowledge and hold space for the countless African-Americans that have lost their lives and been victimized at the hands of the police and provide a safe space for processing the impact of current events on our Black community members. Safe Black Space provides culturally specific strategies and resources to help Black people heal from historical and current wounds, both individually and collectively. Safe Black Space is for people who self-identify as being of African ancestry and who are experiencing racial stress, anxiety, and/or trauma.
We organized this event for Black UCLA graduate students, postdocs, and faculty, but other members of the Black UCLA community are welcome. Please share this announcement with your colleagues. RSVP at https://tinyurl.com/UCLABio1
Please note that, based on interest and response of participants, we will consider additional sessions for the Black community in the future and explore similar approaches for other marginalized groups.
Sincerely,
Drs. Diana Azurdia & Greg Payne
